GROW HAITI'S CHILDREN

                 Demonstrations in Jeremie, Haiti

Dear Grow Haiti’s Children Supporters:

I would like to take this time to update you on the current state of affairs in Haiti and ask for your continued prayers for the country and in particular, those at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage (OLPH).

Haiti has been mired in political turmoil since last July. Haitians are upset over the price and availability of gasoline and diesel, as well as misappropriated treasury funds. The majority of Haitians would like the current president to step down and have new elections. Because Jeremie is an approximate 6 hour bus/truck ride from Port-au-Prince, the town is often spared from the demonstrations in the capital. These demonstrations typically include road blockades created by burning tires and cars.

Jeremie citizens joined the nationwide demonstrations that commenced on February 7th because food and fuel were not being delivered; plus, their purchasing power was being eroded by a 12% annual inflation rate. A black market on food developed and pushed prices beyond what anyone could afford including the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home that we support.

On February 7th Madame Dilene Jacques, the executive director of OLPH, and a driver went three hours south of Jeremie to Les Cayes to procure food. They were caught in violent demonstrations and were unable to leave Les Cayes until Tuesday, February 19th, when they were rescued by Father Garry Pierre Louis, the orphanage’s founder.

In Jeremie, during the week of February 11th, demonstrations occurred at the school that our K through 6th grade boys attend which is near the OLPH boys home. School was disrupted because rocks were thrown and ultimately a firebomb was thrown at the building. We are unsure of damage at the school. We know that the building is solid concrete block with a poured in place concrete roof, so our hope is that the school has survived. Rocks were also thrown at the OLPH boys home breaking windows in the second story guest room. Police fired tear gas to disburse the crowd and unfortunately the boys were impacted. One of the boys was taken to the hospital. Father Garry reports that now all the kids are okay and doing well.

Fr. Robert Models an apron
Fr. Robert models an apron made by one of the teens at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage.  Because electricity is unpredictable, they must sew on a treadle sewing machine.  Thanks to a parishioner at St.Andrews for donating funds to purchase these machines over the years.
